The two piano collections recorded on this CD are very different, but in my view they are linked. In Kreisleriana, Robert Schumann conjures a visionary world of hallucinations and madness, desperate obsession and intimate feelings. The eight fantasies vibrate between dream and poetry, nightmares and resignation. If it were a movie, it would be an almost feverish sci-fi trip into the projections of an extremely sensitive human being, a prisoner of his genius, of contradictions and contrasts, who is not afraid and cannot avoid addressing the sensation of human helplessness. With Pictures at an Exhibition, other visions of sound take shape. I dare say more concrete: inspired by his friend Hartmann’s drawings, Mussorgsky paints a real sequence of stories, pictures, places, characters thereby transforming his visual perceptions into sound reflections on the world, about life and death.
